Poem to Army Penpal during the First Gulf War in Iraq

This poem was sent to my penpal Russ in the First Gulf War! I saw an ad in the Sun for penpals and then sent off a letter and got a reply. The correspondence began!! Little did I know until later that the soldier I was writing to didn't know i was writing to him initially because his mates had asked for me as his pen pal on his behalf and had replied tro my first letter in his name!!!

When the land based fighting starts
Remember that you're in our hearts
We think about you every day
And wish that we could find a way
To make sure that you're safe and sound
And soon to be on your home ground
Where danger isn't lurking near
And we can all forget our fear
We wish you all the Luck you need
To carry out this fearful deed
Be careful Russ and when all's done
If need be, don't be scared to run!
A hero I don't need to meet
Just a man who's standing on two feet!

Thinking about that last line now makes me think I should have done better as those guys are all great Hero's and deserve to be treated as such! Luckily he took it in the way it was meant ie - to stay safe - and not as what could have been interpreted as an unintentional insult by saying he's not a hero!

As this was a bit sad I may try to find time to post again later today with something nice and mushy!!!

That's all for now - see you later - off for a sleep as Sabrina had me up last night!!
